As you already know the situation of animal welfare in Malta leaves much to be desired. Cases of neglect and abuse are rampant and the situation gets worse every day. Not a day goes by without some other horrific story hits the headlines and it is very disappointing to see that this administration, which has a reputation for getting things done very quickly, is taking so much time and just staring cruelty in the face without doing anything effective about it.

When it comes to Animal Welfare and basic rights, the list of shortcomings is long. This also means that your opportunity to do right are many. From horses still being forced to work in the scorching heat, to dogs being left chained and without adequate shelter. From wild animals being kept captive in inadequate conditions, to tropical animals being brought in to Malta illegally. From illegal hunting practices to inhumane conditions at Għammieri. From negligent and abusive owners going unpunished to farms not being monitored for abuse and illegalities.

The list goes on and it’s in your power to make a TIMELY change.

Will you?

You have only recently been made responsible for animal welfare in Malta, and you’re probably already looking at ways and means to improve the situation. However please let me remind you that the issues here are about living, feeling creatures. We’re not talking about things, material gain or luxury. Animal welfare is a basic requirement for a society to call itself progressive and civil, especially one which boasts of success in other areas. As a result waiting will only cause more pain, more anguish and more cruelty. Please do the right thing, and act now.

I am very proud to be Maltese. Unfortunately however when it come to Animal Welfare in my country, I’ve always felt ashamed. I’m hoping that now that you’ve been made responsible of this matter, things will change, and that they will change quickly, so as to avoid further unnecessary pain and suffering to innocent and vulnerable creatures. Abusive owners should be punished and made an example of and the state should not in any way endorse animal negligence. Our country is thriving, our economic situation is the envy of Europe, so it is beyond me to understand how we cannot provide adequate shelter and care for abandoned animals. The situation in Għammieri is not in any way up to standard so please start with that.

As an animal lover who believes in the humane treatment of all animals I feel compelled to let you know just how disappointed I am in your inaction in this matter. It is high time that the safeguarding of animal rights is taken more seriously and given more attention. The animal welfare directorate should be given more funding so that more inspections and action can be taken against people who keep animals in some truly horrific conditions.

It is not acceptable that whilst Malta is doing so well on all economic fronts, animal sanctuaries that are doing brilliant jobs with very little have to depend on alms to the poor. Banning circuses from coming to Malta was a good step in the right direction, but what’s happening with the illegal Polidano zoo? What’s the use of banning circuses only to allow people to keep big cats and other wild animals in cages and rooftops?

Let’s get our act together!
